The team needs two wins to achieve set targets of featuring in the second round.
There has been little to smile about as Malkia Strikers line up at the ongoing FIVB Women’s World Championships in Netherlands but assistant coach Paul Bitok is confident that is about to change.
The national women's volleyball team is set to face arch-rivals Cameroon in their third match of the championship as they eye victory against the African champions.
The Luizomar de Moura-coached side has had a less-than-perfect start to the championship, albeit with some positives to take home.
"We played under pressure in the opening two matches and we could not find a way to beat such teams. We also did not perform at our best.
We expected different results as we wanted to build our momentum towards the two matches that we have set our targets on winning, against Cameroon and Puerto Rico.
We fell below expectations. I believe we will win tomorrow with a few adjustments," offered Bitok.
In their last meeting, Cameroon denied Malkia Strikers a tenth African title as the former won the title with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23) outcome.
At the same competition, the two sides had found themselves in the same pool and Kemya had lost by straight-sets to the Central Africans who were on a revenge mission after Malkia denied them a chance to be at the Tokyo Olympics.
The battle for Malkia Strikers, however, does not end with the Cameroon match, although it would be an important victory.
Bitok's charges will look to cause one more upset in the group for a chance to proceed to the second round of action.
